Lâayoune – The advanced status granted to Morocco by the European Union rewards the Kingdom’s efforts in the field of human rights and the promotion of democracy, Secretary General of the ruling Istiqlal Party Abbas El Fassi said on Sunday.

Speaking at a meeting held by the Party on the 66th anniversary of the presentation of the Independence Manifesto, El Fassi said that Algeria, which opposes Morocco’s territorial integrity to achieve hegemony over the region, continues violating human rights not only in Tindouf, but also throughout the Algerian territory.

“Our brothers held captive in the Tindouf camps live in dehumanizing conditions and are deprived of their rights due to the blockade imposed on them by the Algerian army,” El fassi added.

Morocco has a just cause and does not want to impose any hegemony over the region, but rather desires to build a greater Arab Maghreb and pool efforts to achieve economic development and complementarity, he said.

During the meeting held under theme “advanced regionalization for integrated development”, El Fassi reaffirmed the importance of the Moroccan proposal to grant broader autonomy to its southern provinces, the Sahara, noting that many superpowers described this initiative as consensual, realistic and acceptable political solution, apart from Algeria which always rejects UN resolutions.
