George Joffé, professor at the University of Cambridge and expert on North-African issues, said on Tuesday that “the Algerians instrumentalise the Sahara issue to serve their own interests.”

Joffé told MAP on the sidelines of a conference on “the Euro-Mediterranean Security: Morocco and British perspectives” in Rabat, that this instrumentalisation would go on until major changes take place in Algeria.

He pointed out that Algeria failed to respond favourably to the initiatives taken by Morocco to reach a solution to this issue.

Dr. Joffé said the conference has launched a new debate on means and ways to boost co-operation between Morocco and the United Kingdom, adding that it was interesting to follow such a fruitful debate on security problems, notably those of terrorism in the Sahel region, as well as energy security, to which both countries attach special importance.

The expert said that the conference also enabled the two sides to identify areas where they can work together to reinforce security in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
